SENATE PASSES PACKAGE OF 18 ENERGY COMMITTEE BILLS BY UC, SENDS TO HOUSE

Washington, D.C. – The Senate by unanimous consent tonight passed a package of bills that now have been approved by the Senate Energy & Natural Resources Committee. The package of bills now goes to the House for consideration. The S. 1521 package includes the following bills: S. 1521 – Conveyance of approximately 4.5 acres of land to the American Legion Post in Pahrump, Nevada. The bill also extends the boundaries of ten existing Heritage Areas: Ohio & Erie; Illinois & Michigan; New Jersey Coastal; National Coal; Tennessee Civil War; Rivers of Steel; Essex; Hudson River Valley; John H. Chafee Blackstone River Valley and South Carolina National Heritage Corridor. The bill also reduces to 1 percent royalty for potash and 2 percent for soda ash for the next five years. S. 1521 also includes as separate titles the text of the following bills: H.R. 521 – A bill to establish the Steel Industry National Historic Site in Pennsylvania as a unit of the National Park System. H.R. 1594 – Directs the Secretary of the Interior to conduct a study of the suitability and feasibility of establishing the St. Croix National Heritage Area in St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands. H.R. 1618 – Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area Act. Establishes the Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area in Georgia. Designates the Arabia Mountain Heritage Area Alliance as the Area's management entity. H.R. 1798 – Upper Housatonic Valley National Heritage Area Act. Establishes the Upper Housatonic Valley National Heritage Area in Connecticut and Massachusetts. H.R. 3257 – Western Reserve Heritage Areas Study Act. Requires the Secretary of the Interior to conduct a study regarding the suitability and feasibility of establishing the Western Reserve Heritage Area in the Ohio counties of Trumbull, Mahoning, Ashtabula, Portage, Geague, Lake, Cuyahoga, Summit, Medina, Huron, Lorain, Erie, Ottawa, and Ashland. H.R. 4683 – Establishes he Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor in the coastal counties of South Carolina and Georgia. S. 211 - A bill to establish the Northern Rio Grande National Heritage Area in the State of New Mexico in the counties of Sante Fe, Rio Arriba and Taos. The bill authorizes up to $1 million a year for 15 years, not to exceed a total of $10 million, for the preservation and promotion of the natural, historic and cultural resources in the area. Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-NM, is the original sponsor. S. 323- A bill to establish the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area in Louisiana. S. 840 – A bill to establish the Great Basin National Heritage Route to provide the public with access to certain historical, cultural, natural, scenic, and recreational resources in White Pine County, Nevada, Millard County, Utah, and the Duckwater Shoshone Reservation in Nevada. S. 1118 – Establishes the Champlain Valley National Heritage Partnership within the States of Vermont and New York. S. 916 – Establishes the National Mormon Pioneer Heritage Area in Utah. Designates the Utah Heritage Highway 89 Alliance as the Heritage Area's management entity. S. 2224 – A bill to establish the Bleeding Kansas and the Enduring Struggle for Freedom National Heritage Area in Kansas. S. 1105 – The French Colonial Heritage National Historic Site Study Act of 2003 - Directs the Secretary of the Interior to study the suitability and feasibility of designating the French Colonial Heritage Area within the Ste. Genevieve National Historic District, Missouri, as a unit of the National Park System. S. 276 – Southern Campaign of the Revolution Heritage Area Study Act - Directs the Secretary of the Interior to study and report on the suitability and feasibility of designating specified South Carolina counties, cities, public sites, other sites maintained by the State, and National Park Service sites in the State, as well as appropriate North Carolina sites, as the Southern Campaign of the Revolution Heritage Area. S. 425: A bill to revise the boundary of the Wind Cave National Park in the State of South Dakota. Requires the Park's boundaries to be adjusted to reflect the acquisition of land. S. 426 – The Blunt Reservoir and Pierre Canal Land Conveyance Act of 2003. Deauthorizes the Blunt Reservoir feature of the Oahe Irrigation Project authorized as part of the Pick-Sloan Missouri River Basin Program. S. 1530 – The Pactola Reservoir Reallocation Authorization Act of 2004 - Authorizes the Secretary of the Interior to reallocate the construction costs of Pactola Dam and Reservoir, Rapid Valley Unit, Pick-Sloan Missouri Basin Program, South Dakota, from irrigation purposes to municipal, industrial, and fish and wildlife purposes.
