SENATE APPPROVES THREE DOE NOMINATIONS BY UNANIMOUS CONSENT

Washington, D.C. – The Senate by unanimous consent yesterday confirmed three Department of Energy nominations:
Susan Johnson Grant was confirmed as the DOE Chief Financial Officer. Susan Johnson Grant has recently served as the Director for Corporate Resources with the Defense Finance and Accounting Service. She served as the Agency's Chief Financial Officer and advises the Director and staff on all matters pertaining to financial management, human resources, administrative services, corporate planning, acquisition services and equal employment opportunity. Ms. Grant was appointed to the Senior Executive Service in October, 1999.
Ms. Grant has extensive experience in defense financial management and analysis, having begun her federal career in 1972. She has held various analytical and leadership positions, specializing in management, program, budget, acquisition and logistics analyses. Ms. Grant joined DFAS in March, 1999 as the Deputy Director for Budget, Resource Management Directorate. As such, she was responsible for oversight and management of the Agency's planning, programming, and budgeting program.
Ms. Grant is a 1994 graduate of the Federal Executive Institute, Charlottesville, VA; a 1992 graduate of the Senior Executive Fellows Program, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA; and a 1982 graduate of the Professional Military Comptroller School, Maxwell Air Force Base, AL.
Karen Alderman Harbert was confirmed as the DOE Assistant Secretary for International Affairs and Domestic Policy. Karen Alderman Harbert is the current Deputy Assistant Administrator for Latin American and the Carribean at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) with primary responsibility for all foreign assistance programs in South America and the Caribbean. Previously, she was responsible for marketing for a developer of international infrastructure and power projects. Harbert has also served as an Advisor to the Assistant Secretary for Management at the Organization of American States.
Ms. Harbert has served on the Board of Directors of the Pan American Development Foundation and is a member of the Center for Strategic and International Studies Americas Forum. She received a degree in international policy studies and political science from Rice University in Houston, Texas.
John Spitaleri Shaw was confirmed as the DOE Assistant Secretary of Energy for Environment, Safety and Health. John Spitaleri Shaw became the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Office of Environment, Safety and Health in April 2002 before being promoted to Deputy Chief of Staff and White House Liaison in the Office of the Secretary. Previously, he worked with the law firm Patton Boggs LLP in Washington, D.C. In 1997, he served as a Majority Counsel to the United States Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs.
Mr. Shaw received his B.S. from Syracuse University in 1991, and his J.D. from Catholic University Law School in 1995.
