SENATE ENERGY & NATURAL RESOURCES SCHEDULE FOR THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 20

Washington, D.C. - The Senate Energy & Natural Resources Committee will hold one full committee hearing and one subcommittee hearing next week. The full committee will hold a nomination hearing on Tuesday, September 21 at 10:00 a.m. in SD-366 to consider the nomination of Karen Alderman Harbert, to be an Assistant Secretary of Energy for International Affairs and Domestic Policy, and John Spitaleri Shaw, to be an Assistant Secretary of Energy for Environment, Safety and Health. Karen Alderman Harbert is the current Deputy Assistant Administrator for Latin American and the Carribean at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) with primary responsibility for all foreign assistance programs in South America and the Caribbean. Previously, she was responsible for marketing for a developer of international infrastructure and power projects. Harbert has also served as an Advisor to the Assistant Secretary for Management at the Organization of American States. Ms. Harbert has served on the Board of Directors of the Pan American Development Foundation and is a member of the Center for Strategic and International Studies Americas Forum. She received a degree in international policy studies and political science from Rice University in Houston, Texas. John Spitaleri Shaw became the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Office of Environment, Safety and Health in April 2002 before being promoted to Deputy Chief of Staff and White House Liaison in the Office of the Secretary. Previously, he worked with the law firm Patton Boggs LLP in Washington, D.C. In 1997, he served as a Majority Counsel to the United States Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs. Mr. Shaw received his B.S. from Syracuse University in 1991, and his J.D. from Catholic University Law School in 1995. The National Parks subcommittee will hold a hearing on Tuesday, September 21 at 2:30 p.m. in SD-366 to receive testimony on the following bills: S. 784, to revise the boundary of Petrified Forest National Park in the State of Arizona, and for other purposes; S. 2656, to establish a National Commission on the Quincentennial of the discovery of Florida by Ponce de Leon; S. 2499, to modify the boundary of the Harry S Truman National Historic Site in the State of Missouri, and for other purposes; S. 1311, to establish the Hudson-Fulton-Champlain 400th Commemoration Commission, and for other purposes; and H.R. 2055, to amend P.L. 89-366 to allow for an adjustment in the number of free roaming horses permitted in Cape Lookout National Seashore.
