The Energy Department’s 2006 energy outlook report projects nuclear generating capacity to increase from 100 gigawatts in 2004 to 109 gigawatts in 2019 and to remain at that level through 2030 (about 10% of U.S. generating capacity). The 9 gigawatt increase includes 3 gigawatts from uprates at existing plants and 6 gigawatts from new plants (totaling 6 new plants at 1,000 megawatts each) that the Energy Policy Act of 2005 is expected to stimulate.
