DOMENICI MEETS WITH CHINESE AMBASSADOR
CALLS FOR US-CHINA COOPERATION ON ENERGY ISSUES

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Pete Domenici, ranking member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, today met with Chinese Ambassador to the United States Zhou Wenzhong to discuss energy and climate issues.
After the meeting, which was held at Domenici’s request in his Senate office, Domenici issued the following statement:
“This afternoon, I had a productive meeting with Chinese Ambassador Zhou Wenzhong. Recently, I have articulated my belief that any meaningful effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions must involve China and other developing countries.
“Today, I told Ambassador Wenzhong that I would like the United States and China to be partners on global energy and climate issues. China will soon pass our country as the world’s leading carbon emitter. As China’s economy grows, so too does its use of coal and other carbon producing energy sources. To meet global energy and climate challenges, we need a concerted effort from the leadership of both of our nations to move us in unison.
“China should partner with us now to engage in technical research and development to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. To that end, the Ambassador and I discussed projects in which Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories can collaborate with the Chinese so that both of our nations can benefit.
“Today’s meeting was the beginning of a dialogue I hope to have with other policymakers both in China and in the United States. I look forward to continuing that dialogue when Vice Premier Yi visits Washington in May for the Second U.S./China Strategic Economic Dialogue.”
