WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Pete Domenici, ranking member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, today urged participation in a nationwide volunteer event to benefit America’s public lands.

In a bipartisan letter signed with Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), Domenici encouraged greater grassroots support for the nation’s recreational areas by volunteering on National Public Lands Day.  Held this year on Saturday, Sept 29, the National Public Lands Day provides an opportunity for volunteers to restore hiking trails, improve wildlife habitats, and work to protect natural and cultural resources.

“Many of us are concerned with the conservation of America’s public lands, and this is our chance to give back,” Domenici said.  “Our national and state parks are a fundamental part of our history, and we should continue dedicating ourselves to the maintenance and care of these recreational areas we often take for granted.”

This year marks the 14th annual National Public Lands Day.  Volunteers will be educated on environment and natural resources issues, while building partnerships between communities and the public sector to complete restoration and improvement projects.  Volunteer events will take place at Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona, Allegany State Park in New York, Yosemite National Park in California, and hundreds of other locations throughout the nation.

The National Public Lands Day program is coordinated by the National Environmental Education Foundation, a private, non-profit establishment.  The Energy and Natural Resources Committee’s Subcommittee on Public Lands and Forests oversees wildlife areas and public lands.
