This afternoon, President Obama will enact into law legislation that Chairman Bingaman considers an outstanding achievement for our national public lands. H.R. 146, the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009, which Bingaman helped write and shepherd through the Senate, contains significant conservation measures from both Democrats and Republicans that will protect more than 2 million wilderness acres.
“This is a great day for America’s natural resources. With a stroke of a pen, the President made a promise to future generations come true by helping preserve the natural wonders of this nation,” Sen. Bingaman said. “This landmark legislation will ensure the protection of exceptional wilderness, historic sites, national parks, and precious water resources for years to come.”
The signing ceremony will take place today at 3 p.m. in the East Room of the White House.
