· On Tuesday, April 20, the full committee will receive testimony on carbon capture and sequestration legislation, including S. 1856, S. 1134 and other bills. Witnesses will include Jim Markowsky, assistant secretary of fossil energy, U.S. Department of Energy; Anne Castle, assistant secretary for water and science, U.S. Department of the Interior; Joan MacNaughton, senior vice president, Alstom Power, London; Ben Yamagata, executive director, Coal Utilization Research Council, Washington, D.C.; Mark Brownstein, deputy director, Environmental Defense Fund, New York; Kurt House, chief executive officer, C12 Energy, Cambridge, MA; and Adam Vann, legislative attorney, Congressional Research Service. · On Wednesday, April 21, the subcommittee on Public Lands and Forests will consider S. 1546, for the conveyance of certain parcels of land to the town of Mantua, Utah; S. 2798, to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire through insect and disease infestation treatment of National Forest System and adjacent lands; S. 2830, to amend the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 to clarify that uncertified States and Indian tribes have the authority to use certain payments for certain non-coal reclamation projects; and S. 2963, to designate certain land in Oregon as wilderness, to provide for the exchange of certain Federal land and non-Federal land. Witnesses will include Harris Sherman, undersecretary of agriculture for natural resources and environment; Glenda Owens, deputy director, office of surface mining reclamation and enforcement, Department of the Interior; Forrest Reinhardt, president, Venture Beyond, Coto de Caza, CA; Gregory Conrad, National Association of Abandoned Mine Land Programs and executive director, Interstate Mining Compact Commission, Herndon, VA; Dominik Kulakowski, assistant professor, Clark University, Worcester, MA; and Colorado State Sen. Chairman Bingaman's stature as a leader on climate issues and sustainable development led Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg to arrange for the two to meet during his visit to Washington this week. Their discussion in Bingaman’s office focused on pending climate and energy legislation in the U.S. Senate.
