Barrasso: This Cyberattack Underscores Importance of Energy Pipelines to Our Economy & National Security

May 10, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Senator John Barrasso (R-WY), ranking member of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources (ENR), issued the following statement in response to the cyberattack on Colonial Pipeline.

“This weekend’s cyberattack on the Colonial oil pipeline should concern every American,” said Barrasso. “We must make our critical energy infrastructure secure. This cyberattack underscores just how important energy pipelines are to our economy and our national security. The Biden administration wants to kill oil and natural gas pipelines. We need more pipelines not fewer.”

Background Information:

On March 25, 2021, Barrasso, along with ten other senators, sent a bipartisan letter to Department of Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm voicing their support for the Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security, and Emergency Response (CESER) and urging the Department to maintain CESER’s current leadership structure. Senators Jim Risch (R-ID), Angus King (I-ME), Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Joe Manchin (D-WV), Mike Crapo (R-ID), Bill Cassidy (R-LA), Ben Sasse (R-NE), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Martin Heinrich (D-NM), and Susan Collins (R-ME) also signed the letter.
