Manchin, Murkowski Statement On Growing Bipartisan, Bicameral Efforts To Ban Russian Energy Imports

March 7, 2022

Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV), Chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, released the following statement on the recently announced bipartisan, bicameral agreement from the Senate Committee on Finance that provides a legislative path forward to ban imports of energy products from Russia.

“Vladimir Putin’s unprovoked war on Ukraine has killed hundreds of innocent people – many of them women and children. Banning Russian energy imports is one of our most potent tools to stop the funding of this senseless terror. There is bipartisan will from Congress to do so across multiple Senate and House Committees and the political spectrum. We applaud the Senate Finance Committee for joining our calls to ban Russian imports and rebuke Putin’s continued aggression. We will continue working with leaders on both sides of the aisle and in both chambers to get this ban enacted immediately if the President does not act.”

Last week, Senators Manchin and Murkowski led a bipartisan group of 31 senators in introducing the Ban Russian Energy Imports Act to prohibit the importation of Russian crude oil, petroleum, petroleum products, liquefied natural gas and coal.
